ISBN code

International Standard Book Number is a unique identification number assigned to books and some other publications to facilitate their identification and accounting.

Highlights regarding ISBN:

Structure:

  • ISBN consists of 13 numerals (since 2007; before that there were only 10).
  • The number includes elements indicating the country or geographic region of the publisher, the publisher, and the edition of the book.

Purpose:

  • ISBN simplifies book accounting and ordering in the book trade and librarianship.
  • It allows us to identify the book, its edition and format precisely.

Assignment of ISBN:

  • ISBN is assigned by the publisher before the book publication.
  • Every new edition of a book receives a new ISBN.

Where to find:

ISBN is usually found on the back of the title page and on the back cover of the book (as a barcode).

International organization:

ISBN is controlled by the ISBN International Agency, which coordinates national agencies of different countries.

Importance for authors and publishers:

  • ISBN is important for sales tracking and inventory management.
  • It is an important tool in the global book trade.

ISBN facilitates the process of buying, selling, searching and book management on a global scale by making it an integral part of the modern book industry.

Age rate

According to the federal law "On Protection of Children from Information Harmful to Their Health and Development" (FL No. 436-FZ of 29.12.2010), all literary works, regardless of genre, whether in print or electronic form, have to be labeled with appropriate age limits. This requirement is aimed at protecting children from materials that may be harmful to their health or upbringing.

0+ — Content for children younger than 6 years old may include symbolic scenes of violence if they are appropriate to the genre, provided with sympathy for the victim and emphasizing the victory of good over evil.

6+ — Descriptions of non-realistic scenes of disease, accidents, and violent acts are acceptable, although without describing their consequences.

12+ — It is acceptable to depict violence and disasters without detail. Alcohol, tobacco and drug consumption may present only in a context of condemnation. Simple descriptions of hugs and kisses are allowed.

16+ — References to disease and disasters without details are acceptable in the books. Demonstration of violence and the use of harmful substances are condemned. Roughhouse language is acceptable, swearing is not. Sex scenes are allowed without anatomical details.

18+ — The book contains detailed descriptions of diseases, disasters, drug and alcohol use, realistic intimate scenes, unconventional relationships and swear words.

Publication abstract

A brief description of the book, article, or any other published material content. It provides basic information about the subject matter and nature of the work, helping the readers to understand the essence of the document and whether its suitability to their needs.

For formats larger than A5, the recommended length of the abstract is no more than 800 characters of text. For A5 and smaller formats no more than 400-500 characters are accepted.
